The last few weeks our updates have mainly come through our Remind 101 App. If you do not have that I would encourage you to sign up. It is a quick way to send out any updates, news or messages. Occasionally we will update the blog with some helpful information or for days when the content may go over the character limit of Remind 101. I know what you're thinking....most of my updates violate any character limit.....point taken.
Today we do have more stuff than normal....so we'll update here.
To stay up to date on Rock SM events and updates please text the message @therock-sm to this # - 81010.
When will send out a message it will appear as a text. You can respond to it or simply get the update and move on with life. We've found while not everyone reads their emails quickly they just can't help looking at that text. Most all of our updates are important and some are extremely timely....for this reason we hope this method is much better at keeping you as informed as possible. But you must sign up.
Last Night and Next Week (Sexual Sins)
We have been answering questions asked by our students. They've been really good questions and give us an indication of what's going through the heads of our students. With so many questions we've not been able to go into great depths with each question but we have been very up front and to the point with responses. We also have led them down the right path to continue to dig on their own.
We started a few weeks ago with the more innocent questions and have eased our way into some of the more sensitive, real life situations. From sharing the gospel to doing a daily devotion to self worth and even respecting parents and decisions we have had an array of questions.
Last night we moved into temptation type issues.....How do we say weed (pot) is not ok? What about alcohol? What can we do about addiction? Help with Phone Use. These are real questions and real problems today. We, the church, must have an answer.....we do. But we, the church, must be willing to discuss these things.
We know our students have questions....if we are not willing to address them to whom should, or will, they go? The Bible says to study to prove yourself and to give an answer of the hope that is in you. I also believe this lends us to be able to disprove things as well. We must know right from wrong...we must know God's standard and plan and purpose for our lives. The Bible has the answers....we must be willing to dig and find them. We hope to do just that as we answer questions students have. But we also must accept God's Word as truth!
Great Resources for some current issues:
(we gave these to your students but want to pass them along to you as well.)
Next week will be a great night but a sensitive night. We will be addressing Sexual Sins. First thought most will have is this night will be discussing Sex in general. We will but in terms of how it relates to things our students are facing.
Homosexuality, Same Sex Marriage, Pre-Martial Sex, How far is too far? How do I handle guys being sexual by touch or words? Porn addiction. These are real issues our students are confronted with daily. In the same way people are cussing around them, inviting them to go a way you as a parent do not want them to go, our students our faced with multiple issues. We want to give them a comprehensive answer. By that I mean we want them to know that while we're surrounded by darkness we are to be the light. We want them to know that while we seem trapped in a dark place personally there is hope and a way out. There is a way that seems right to man....this way leads to death (Proverbs 14:12). Ignorance is the first step many take towards death.....we seek to provide wisdom....or at least lead them to the place all wisdom is found, The Bible.
Next week will not be a "birds and bees" talk but we will discuss God's plan for sex being between a man and a woman who are married. This is God's standard. Any thought or action outside of this is wrong. We will also address that a sin in this category does not always mean two people. Our minds, thinking, phones, what we allow inside our minds, and attitudes can be the starting point to a lifestyle that ultimately leads to the end....actual sex outside of God's plan. This is sin.
We want to be clean.....we want to live clean in a dirty world. Purity and Godliness are the goal....but why? We want to go beyond....don't have sex.....and explain why this standard is to be kept. There are obvious reasons....STD's and pregnancy. But there are bigger reasons.....holiness, purity, and Christlikeness. We want to please God with our lives....so we also want to please Him in our answers to questions of this nature.
So....with all that said please call, email or text any questions or concerns you may have.
We will be dividing our students out into two groups, Middle School and High School. The content will be slightly different to address the concerns of each group. I will be more than happy to explain the details to you personally but hopefully the above explains everything fairly well.
Below are some pictures of stats that will only help us see the need for this topic to be discussed. The research in full can be found at Barna Research.
We hope your student will grow in wisdom next week and see the danger of sexual sin and the wide nature of such a devastating, yet beautiful gift from God. We can accept God's standard for sex and every other thing in life or we can trade it in for a cheap imitation. We can enjoy the eternal or settle for temporary.
This is a long message but we wanted to make you fully aware of our topic next week and also give you a glimpse into how we would be approaching it.
Why a blog?
A great way for parents and ministry to connect and continue the conversation of what's going on at The Rock.
