Good morning! I'm hoping all our students slept good last night after our RockFeast! Forks & Flannels was such a success. The food was also a great success, so much that next year we're considering going with the theme of Spoons and Stretchy Pants. Seriously, it was so good to be together and share a meal, some laughter, encouragement and good company! Praying students left with fully bellies and full hearts as we feasted on the generosity from you parents who provided food and also Psalm 100. I'd encourage you to read it today at some point. What a great reminder of a few things:
Praying everyone has a great Thanksgiving week and pray our hearts begin to express this thanks daily and not simply for one day/week a year. The Lord our God is good!
a few things to remember:
Good afternoon! Just another great fall day here in Roopville, GA! A few things to remind you of and then a quick recap of last night at The Rock.
Quickly though, we're working on some things that we hope to introduce in the next few weeks. We're going to be offering some Rock shirts and hoodies in the near future. We were really hoping to make these available for Christmas but it appears we may miss that mark. We're currently working with a bit of a reworking of our logo and then will plan to offering a couple of different options. So know that's coming up in the near future, for when your student comes home begging for a new shirt or hoodie.
RockFeast - This event is a favorite among many of us. It really gives the sense that we are simply one big family enjoying a meal together. This is also a great opportunity for you as parents to step in and help....can't have a feast without food. Much of the stuff is covered as of now but there still are a few things left. If you want to help out we'd love for you to visit the sign up page and grab one of those....just make sure you sign up so we don't find ourselves doubling up. We can always use extra drinks, those can be saved, but the food stuff typically must go home with someone!
Turkey Bowl - This event is our annual flag football game. It happens on Sunday, Nov. 25th after the morning service. Students go grab a quick lunch, to go, and then head over to (new location) Central Middle School for a flag football tournament. Students needs to sign up in The Rock. We'll announce teams the week of Thanksgiving on all our social networking apps and of course through email and here.
Refuel - All deposits are now due for both Refuel trips. We must get our housing finalized and begin the process of shirt sizes. In order to help we need you to fill out the Refuel form....even if you're student has signed up and paid a deposit already. This will help us better consolidate all the names and shirt sizes. That form can be found on the Refuel page
The Gospel & You series continued by looking at Social Issues, or at least one big social issue. The Gospel influences how we live our lives right? We can't assume the Gospel is only good for reserving a space in Heaven. The Gospel is much more than that. This includes how I respond to issues in the world in which I live. So...the Gospel influences and shapes how we are to believe and respond to issues, namely homosexuality?
This is a very close topic to us. We polled the students last night through an online poll. 77% of our students expressed that someone close to them in involved in the homosexual lifestyle. That could be a family member, close friend or classmate. How do our students feel about homosexuality? 88% believed it was a sin. So this issue is close and this issue is a little foggy in some of our eyes. That being said, we need to bring light to the situation.
We did this and we'll continue to do this by looking at 4 big areas.
1. Identify the issue. (eventually we throw every issue to the test, as we walk through life.)
2. Identify the Ultimate Authority - where is it you will go to find out if something is ultimately
right or wrong? For us, it's God. God has the right to declare all that is right/wrong.
3. Identify the main communication for this Ultimate Authority - for us, it's the Bible.
The Bible is God's main source of communicating to us. The Bible informs our belief.
4. Apply the Word to the issue - Ultimate we say this...What does the Bible say about _______.
After this we simply respond rightly. We allow the Bible to rule over our feelings.
This issue, homosexuality, is a sensitive issue...it challenges our thoughts towards people rights, heart strings. We have a choice. Go with your feelings or go with the Word of God. Not sure about you but I didn't "FEEL" like getting out of bed this morning. I'm sure in a few more years I'll have a desire to get out of a bed but won't "FEEL" like it. Our feelings are the thermometer to our heart but they are never to be the thermostat of our reality. That's actually a pretty good statement right there.
BUT THEN....we take all that information we found from the above digging and we apply it. We then respond to the world, to the issue in love, as God responded to us when we were dead in our sins, His enemy. So November 28th we'll continue this sermon by looking at "WHAT NOW?"
Attached are the sermon notes we used last night and the ones we'll continue using the next time we're together. In between now and then we have the RockFeast and then it's Thanksgiving week....so our next official Rock will be November 28th.
Why a blog?
A great way for parents and ministry to connect and continue the conversation of what's going on at The Rock.
